Overview of the painting :
Alyanka – David Petrovich Sterenberg. 1926. Oil on canvas. 125×197
D. P. Sterenberg (1881-1948) was one of the active organizers and members of the Society of Stancovist Artists. The works of the master are characterized by expressive sharpness of images, laconic composition, generalization and clarity of the pattern, deliberately flat-building of space.
However, the heroine of the artist becomes not a fun, life-satisfied athlete, but a peasant girl, in whose consciousness the memory of the famine of the 1920s is forever preserved. She stands near the table, on it a plate with the edge of black bread. The table is absolutely empty, this is a bare field with only one character – bread. Sterenberg refuses to reproduce reality in detail, creating conditionally illusory blue-brown space.
With mean, but precisely verified means of color and composition, Sterenberg recreates the tragedy of the era.
