Overview of the painting :

Autumn motive – Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. Oil on canvas. 143 x 98 cm
Changes in life at the turn of the 19-20th centuries had a great influence on the work of Viktor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. The outgoing noble culture, the empty manor houses and parks determined the subject of his subsequent work. The artist creates a whole series of invented genre scenes unfolding against the background of ancient interiors and picturesque corners of nature, the beginning of which was laid by this picture. The most important thing he considered was the emotional emotions and feelings that this picture conveys.

Early autumn, a clear warm day. Sunbeams with silver glare play on the beginning yellow foliage of thick bushes. In a wooden gazebo, seen by wild grapes, two young people sit silently.

A young man in a white wig, dressed in a blue-colored satin suit and snow-white stockings, leaning forward, sits on a bench. The hands lying on the knees are compressed into the lock, issuing internal voltage. The head is low, the face is not visible. All arguments in the conversation are exhausted, and he is very upset by the result.

The young young lady sitting opposite, turning a little away from the interlocutor, looks to the side. A light white and blue air dress shades tanned skin, a pearl string beads adorn the elegant neck. Red-chestnut hair, laid in a simple hairstyle, opens a sad and slightly tired face with subtle features. She seems calm, but you can see how your hands are teeming with a beautiful pale pink rose lying on her lap. The conversation was not easy for her, but she had already decided everything for herself.

And let the artist not observe historical authenticity, because the costumes of heroes from different eras are much more important for him to convey the feelings and experiences of the characters.

A bright, joyful range of colors: white, sky blue, olive green with bright spots of red and pink-orange, together with smooth, flowing lines create a lyrical and peaceful mood. However, the plastic of the body of the gentleman and young ladies, their posture tells about dreams that are not destined to come true, about broken hopes. And the autumn melody of ancient sadness is very clearly heard.
