Domenico Theotokopoulou (El Greco, for simplicity, that the Spanish painter began to call himself so much later) was born in 1541 in Crete. Estimated date, accurate records about a birth of the artist there. Date and place of birth, the artist announced himself, however it could easily be wrong, as on the first 25 years of the artist unknown to almost nothing. He was born (again, presumably) wealthy, a tax collector and could get a good education. The desire to comprehend the new El Greco carried through a lifetime: the biography of this Spanish artist we read that he was familiar with the major scholars of his time, and left behind a large (for its time) library of books in several languages.

In 1568 the artist moved from Crete to Venice, where perhaps he studied under Titian. From Venice, El Greco moved to Rome, settled at cardinal Alessandro Farnese, actively draws. But Rome turned out to be too small in order for the talent of El Greco, turned on full power, so the artist went to Spain.

In Toledo artist immediately appreciated: the altarpiece “assumption of the virgin”, “Removing clothes with Christ” for the Cathedral. In Toledo El Greco started a family, however, was not able to make it official. At least the record of Jerome de Las Cuevas became the wife of El Greco, no. But there is a record that the couple had a son and a set of documentary evidence that El Greco was constantly dissatisfied with the payment for their work, was suing customers, or they with him. Church, is the largest customer of works by El Greco, were often dissatisfied with the work of the artist, considering that his works are not as strict and Orthodox. In the end, and in Toledo El Greco was close and he turned his gaze to the Escorial, the monastery-Palace near Madrid. For the monastery of El Greco wrote “the Martyrdom of St. Mauritius”. However, king Philip II of Spain did not accept the leaf, the narrowness of Outlook prevented the king to assess the intent of the artist. It was a blow to El Greco, crippled physically, mentally and financially.

Died El Greco in poverty. The remains of the artist is lost. Own death, the artist proved that the body is nothing but matter and the soul is immortal.
