Description of the picture :
Cripples – Peter Braigel the Elder. 1568. Wood, butter. 18×21
Flemish artist Peter Braigel the Elder in his genre works repeatedly portrayed the crippled. In the 16th century, crippleds were frequent on city streets and rural roads. The interest of a painter is associated not so much with their physical disabilities, but with psychology and behavior that are different from the worldview and manner of healthy people. It is noteworthy that representatives of this social group of the population never became the subject of Braigel’s irony and do not meet as characters of the proverbs illustrated by him.
The painting “Cales” is the last big work of the artist, written a year before his death.
