Overview of the painting :
Carrying the cross – Simone Martini. 1333. Wood, tempera. 30×20.5
“Sunting the Cross” is a fragment of the altar known as “Poliptych Orsini”. It is dedicated to the passions of Christ and consists of six parts, now stored in various European museum collections.
This work of the master of the Siena school Simone Martini (about 1284-1344) is distinguished by the drama and emotional intensity that the artist brought into the traditional plot. On the faces of the characters, feelings are clearly read that overwhelm them, which would be unthinkable for the Byzantine manner of writing. The gestures and facial expressions of heroes are pathetic and a little theatrical, but the artist’s personal attitude to the event of the Holy History that he depicts is reflected in this, his empathy.
