Overview of the painting :
Christ on Shrovetide Hill – Marco Bazaiti (Basaiti). 1516. Oil on canvas. 371×224
Another traditional name for the canvas is “Prayer for the Chalice”. The work was ordered by the artist Francesco Foscari for the family altar in the church of San Jobbe. Therefore, in the foreground, as if opening the spectator to the sacred scene of the last moments of the Savior’s freedom in earthly life, saints Francis, Mark and Louis Toulouse are represented, in whose name the donator and his sons Marco and Luigi were named.
The “Prayer for the Chalice” by Basaiti (about 1470-1530) is approaching by composition to the “St. Jeronim” by Giovanni Bellini. The subtle observer Alexander Benoit noted that the motive of the painter is richer and prettier than the motives of his predecessor.
