Overview of the painting :
Fair – Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev. 1906. Paper on cardboard, graphite, tempera. 66.5×88.5
Fair is a major event in village life. The ability to buy for the future, sell surpluses, have fun, finally. This is the Kustodiev fair. The artist remains invisible to the fair audience – not a single person is deployed to the audience. Everyone is busy with trading, choice, calculation.
People are dressed smartly: boots and new bast shoes in men, women have light dresses, bright scarves, holiday ribbons in braids.
In the foreground are two old men discussing what is happening, comparing last year’s fairs with the current one. Children at the fair are busy with their simple needs. The girl, squeezing the donated doll, eagerly looks at the rest of the toys on the counter. A boy with a piece of sugar in his hand, thoughtfully enjoys treat.
Women surrounded the merchant with bright scarves. Someone chooses new rake, buckets, baskets. Young guys try the accordion “on the sound.”. The fair is noisy.
And above, above the fair bustle, white churches against the background of the cloudy white sky, snowing forests in the distance, dark roofs of old hut. Soon the fair will end and everyday life will come, an ordinary village measured life.
