Overview of the painting :

Gamayun, the bird of the present is Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov. 1897. Oil on canvas. 200 x 150

The fabulous character – Gamayun, the bird of the things – came to the work of Vasnetsov from ancient Slavic legends. She was considered the bird of Veles, one of the gods of the pantheon of the Slavic peoples. Gamayun knows everything and can predict the future, but this secret will be revealed only to the initiate.

The composition of the picture is emphasized decorative and sophisticated. On a thin, gracefully curved branch of a tree sits a fantastic bird with a female face of rare beauty. On it, the seal of longing – omniscience takes away all the mental strength of Gamayun. She portends a storm, the first impulses of which already develop her luxurious plumage.

The color scheme of the picture is simple and rich at the same time. The background image of a magic bird is the endless space of the golden-chry hue, which makes you imagine the sunset over endless expanses. In the opera of Gamayun, blue-black and golden feathers are combined with a pronounced reddish ebb, as if blood was baked on them.

The sophisticatedly drawn silhouette of the bird echoes the bizarre apologies of the branches of the tree. Together, this gives dynamism to a static image – it seems to the viewer that the wind blows from the picture and the rustle of the feathers of the legendary creature is clearly heard.
