Overview of the painting :
Good afternoon – Isaac Ilyich Levitan. 1895. Paper, pastel. 48×62
A narrow strip of greenery separates the sky and water in the master’s study. The water surface is restless. The sky is also dominated by the wind. Only one small detail – the stems of the reed bending under the pressure of autumn air – fill the work with sounds and a sense of movement. Rolling clouds and timid glimpses of the blue sky fill the work with energy, dynamically emphasize the atmosphere of impending inclement.
The texture of the water is transmitted surprisingly reliably. The reflection of the sky is accurate and scrupulous. The predominance of shades of gray color, dark green tones, blue glimpses, merging into a single composition, convey mood and give a special sound to all work.
