Overview of the painting :

Harmony – Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. Canvas, tempera. 162 x 90 cm
Returning from France, Viktor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov creates his own world in paintings, full of romanticism and charm of past years. Dreams of beautiful are reflected in this genre scene.

Quiet summer evening. Gradually, the high sky changes its color: the smoke-blue, pale-silac paints merge with the coral reflections of the setting sun. A layer of low, dense clouds swirling, goes beyond distant hills. Large white-pink clouds rise above them, their soft glow underline blue shadows. Behind the thick dark green, almost black bushes you can see the ash-gray walls and the dull reddish-brown roof of the manor.

A group of people gathered on the green lawn. Two young fragile girls sitting next to them, dressed in bright, lush dresses with soft folds on their backs. Their shoulders are slightly lowered, dark-chestnut hair laid in smooth hairstyles underline the neck’s elegant line and the warm color of golden skin.

One of them turned to a friend, on her tender spiritualized face a dream expression. They carefully and bewitchedly listen to the young gentleman standing in front of them. Relying on the cane with his right hand, in his left he holds a tomik of poems that he inspirationally recites, covering his eyes. He is dominated by poetry. The blue-faced color of the satin outfit, snow-white stockings and lace shirts give it to the image of romance.

Behind him, on the very edge of a wooden bench, sits an elderly woman in a scarf and a warm sweater. Tired of laying her hands on her knees, listening to poetic lines, she thinks of something of her own.

Non-bright, calm colors create a sense of peace. Muffled blue, blue, green and gray colors are harmoniously combined with warm brown, cream and pink shades. The artist’s smears are subordinate to a certain rhythm: smoothly follow the bends of clouds and folds on clothes, overlap each other, creating the volume of foliage of trees, wriggle along with grass, giving rise to a feeling of a quiet breeze.

At dusk, everything seems a little unrealistic. Slightly blurry contours, the glare of the setting sun and the barely noticeable whitish shadows give the picture a light touch of sadness.
