Overview of the painting :

The Holy Allegory is Giovanni Bellini. 1490-1499. Wood, butter. 73×119
Giovanni Bellini, whose work influenced all Venetian painting and, above all, her mood, left behind a riddle that they cannot solve so far: what is the plot of the painting “Holy Allegory”? This abstract name was given to her because no one could definitely answer the question.

The artist depicted the so-called holy interview: the saints are coming to the throne of Our Lady. Among them, you can distinguish Paul with a sword, driving a man in a turban, Peter, leaning on a balustrade and guarding the entrance to the site, Sebastian with an arrow in his chest and Job, who prayerfully folded his hands. But the composition of the “holy interview”, always the former when Bellini or other artists turned to this plot “is central, is turned to the audience sideways and becomes one of the motives presented. The other is babies playing under the tree. In their group stands out the one who holds in his hands an apple symbolizing human sins. This child can be Christ, who came into the world to atone for sins, and the babies around him can be souls who have fallen into purgatory, for which the saints pray. The river is most likely the Summer separating this world from the world of the living, which is visible on average and long-term. There he prays in the cave of an anachoret, a centaur roams nearby, personifying temptations, and even further people live their usual lives.
