Overview of the painting :
Landscape with a rainbow – Savrasov. 1881
Unusual picture. It was as if it was created by another artist, this is the feeling of anyone who sees her for the first time. The landscape master repeatedly wrote to the rainbow, seeing in it the forerunner of good and divine favor. In this work, the quirk of nature looks like a divine light breaking through darkness, tearing a deaf cloud fence to bring hope to the world for a quick calm of the storm.
Exactly half of the landscape is still dominated by severe weather. White birds rush against the background of black from the accumulated moisture of clouds. The multi-colored bright rainbow has already torn the formidable sky.
The other half of the landscape pleases the eye with light and peace. Everything is gone, calmed down, dissolved. The paths flooded with rain will soon dry out, harmony will reign.
The iron nature of the work creates a sense of instantness, momentaryness. The author managed to “capture” a second, apogee, the climax of bad weather. Using a sharp contrast, the artist seeks brightness and multifaceted plot in his work.
The painting was created when the personality of the great master was well known, and his works were recognized as a model of artistic creativity. But the atmosphere itself, the mood of this picture speaks of the author’s internal conflict. Violation of internal balance. The picture can be regarded as a creative “scream”. On the one hand, the work was done with undoubted skill, on the other hand, this is an emotional surge, the artistic embodiment of which the author found in an unbending element.
Such emotionality is not at all inherent in the artist’s work, but this work can tell a lot about the difficult and such tragic fate of the great Russian artist.
