Overview of the painting :

Summer – Giuseppe Archimboldo. 1573. Oil on canvas. 76×63.5

The work of Giuseppe Archimboldo, a representative of mannerism, is very unusual. He created portraits of contemporaries, but just like no one had done before him. The faces of people were surprisingly composed, like a mosaic, of various fruits, vegetables, flowers, bird feathers (and sometimes whole birds), fish, sinks and other seafood, as well as other objects and their parts. All of them, by one or another sign, were associated with a specific created image by the artist. Each time he managed to give his “creation” a unique appearance and even slightly reveal his character.

Summer is an example of such a metamorphous picture from the cycle “Seasons”, symbolizing the development of human life. Summer is youth. Bright colors triumph on the canvas, the face is “lay out” of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
