Overview of the painting :
Little beggar – Bartolome Esteban Murillo. Around 1650. Oil on canvas. 134×100
Bartolome Esteban Murillo painted religious paintings, as well as genre works, the heroes of which were poor commoners.
The artist loved to portray street boys in their daily activities. One of them is captured in the picture “Little Beggar.”. The life of this child, like many of his peers who find themselves in similar circumstances, is not rich in joyful events and does not indulge him. All her “generous gifts” easily fit into the composition of the work: miserable rags, a wicker straw bag with several apples, some shrimp lying right on the floor, a clay jug and a dark corner in which a poor boy sits surrounded by his household.
The painting arrived in the Louvre in 1858.
