Description of the picture :
The Madonna of Chancellor Nicolas Rolen is Jan van Eik. 1435. Wood, butter. 66×62
With its name, the painting “Madonna Chancellor Nicolas Rolen”, created by one of the founders of the Northern Renaissance, Flemish artist Jan van Eik (1385 / 1390-1441), is obliged to the customer, Burgundy Chancellor Nicholas Rolen. The Chancellor is the protagonist of the composition: he sits opposite the Virgin Mary, and the Baby blesses him. The architectural environment is perfectly written, through the light arched openings of which a marvelous view of a small kindergarten opens, symbolizing the integrity of the Virgin. Space runs away into the distance. Landscape gives an additional characteristic of images: behind the Roller, residential buildings are visible, and behind the Virgin Mary – churches.
