Overview of the painting :
Madonna with the Baby surrounded by angels, with the saints of Frediano and Augustine – Filippo Lippi. (Altar Barbados) 1437. Wood, tempera. 208×244
Filippo Lippi (1406-1469), an artist of the early Renaissance, having received a monastery education, took a monastic vow and created religious compositions.
This is an altar image ordered by a painter for a chapel dedicated to St. Frediano in the church of Santo Spirito in Florence. The artist is the true singer of the beautiful. In the image of Madonna with the Baby and the angels of heaven, he creates lovely images that amaze with exalted beauty. Angels are amazing in their immediacy: they look thoughtfully around, one of them looks at the Madonna, who, holding the divine Infant in her arms and lowering her eyes, approaches two kneeling saints – Frediano and Augustine.
Until 1810, the altar remained in the church. During the Napoleonic conquests, he was sent to France and was no longer returned to his homeland. In 1814, work hit the Louvre.
