Narcissus sketch – Peter Paul Rubens

Young Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in the stream – so the gods punished him for rejecting the love of the nymph Echo. A miniature compositional sketch (14.5X14 cm) depicts the moment when Narcissus, leaning over the water, with unexpected excitement notices his reflection, and the sentence of the gods is fulfilled. Light strokes are the Rubens landscape, a magnificent athletic figure, folds of fluttering pink fabric. The artist shows us the beautiful world of fairy tale – not so much ancient as his own, Rubensky. For all his fluency, he writes quite clearly and accurately so that another can work according to his sketch: the big picture for Torre de la Parade, now in the Madrid Museum of Prado, was performed not by him, but by Jan Kossirs.
