Overview of the painting :
Still life. Field flowers – Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov. Oil on canvas. 126 x 131 cm
In the performance of Gerasimov there are many all kinds of very talented portraits of his contemporaries, and probably he felt like a portrait painter. But his lyrical, poetic landscapes and still lifes, which most often Alexander Mikhailovich wrote on vacation in his hometown of Kozlova, are no less magnificent and reflect the artist’s state of mind. They are dreamy and gentle, or sunny and considered.
It is such a mood, light, summer, lyrical that occurs in the viewer considering “Naturmort. Field flowers. “. All the diversity and beauty of Russian fields on the artist’s table. There are many flowers, they did not even fit in vases and therefore, in addition, banks with water, it is impossible for this splendor to quickly fade and not have time to please others.
The volume and additional saturation of the composition with flowers gives the mirror in the background. It reflects a glass vase of water and a candle in candelabra with mother-in-law. The daylight from the window is not bright, but giving exactly the glow, thanks to which the author manages to convey the blue of shadows, halftone and tenderness to the whole still life.
With all the variety of colors, there is no sensation of motley and glade. The general impression of the picture is the simple and tender beauty of Russian nature, which always gave inspiration to people of creative professions. For a poem artist, it would be a poem, for a musician – a symphony, for an artist – a landscape masterpiece.
The viewer is ready, without taking his eyes off, to peer into this floral splendor, to admire meadow, lovely cornflowers and, of course, affectionate and touching daisies. They stand out especially against the whole background of bouquets and, with their white petals, beckoning in the vast distance of steppes, ringing from clean air, filled with smells of flowers, meadow and steppes of the Russian plain.
Of course, in this work there is no rush and impatience of the artist, such as in the picture “After the Rain”, where it was necessary to quickly catch the moment that was given by a volatile nature. On the contrary, field flowers are written out by the author very carefully, to each petal and streak on the leaves. And from this, the landscape becomes even more spectacular and more expressive, more naturalistic and more lively.
This also shows the talent of a true artist in order to see the beautiful in ordinary, everyday and simple things and pass it on to the audience. And Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov succeeded. Because everyone who stops near his still life will definitely say how good, handsome, bright and joyful the world around us is.
