Overview of the painting :
Niagara Falls – Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky. Oil on canvas. 35 x 52 cm
Sea landscapes occupy a large place in the work of Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, but in addition to them, portraits written by him, mountain and steppe landscapes, paintings on biblical stories are well known. Traveling around the world, he painted a lot, trying to capture what he saw, share his impressions.
During his stay in America and Canada, the artist visited Niagara Falls. This species delighted him so much that he wrote some wonderful works with his image. One of them is in front of us.
Cloudy day. Lead gray clouds tighten the low gloomy sky, only a bright, pale strip is visible on the horizon, and the sun’s rays can still break through the tears of the clouds.
The master depicts a waterfall from a high point from which a wide all-sea river is clearly visible. The rocky ledge, overgrown with large trees, divides it into two unequal parts, one of which resembles a horseshoe in shape. Waves covered with white lamb rush to the cliff and fall down from a great height with magnificent jets. The smallest water splashes form clouds of fog, swirling at the foot of the waterfall. The sun’s rays illuminate them with a soft white light, a non-small rainbow pours over on water dust.
Several people stand on the edge of the rock, admiring the picture spread out in front of them. Their small figures allow us to evaluate the scale and splendor of this amazing unique sight.
A small boat sailed to the place of water fall, so that tourists could closely look at the splendor of falling streams.
Under the sun, the cold greenish-gray color of the water becomes turquoise, silver glare plays on the waves, foam sparkles with crystal sparks.
The artist’s palette is small: calm, restrained gray, green and white paints. But mixing these colors with inconspicuous strokes, the painter lays the finest layers on the canvas and the image comes to life. We feel the excellent power and the lush power of falling jets, moist air is filled with the smallest spray, a strong roar of water drowns everything around.
Aivazovsky perfectly conveys the greatness and beauty of the waterfall. The picture makes you forget about the urgent, enjoying the appearance of the indomitable aquatic element.
