Overview of the painting :
The old townman is Vasily Ivanovich Surikov. 1882. Oil on canvas. 97×140.9
Work is a “domestic portrait” of a peasant. A folding beard, long unshaven hair, thin ports, a bright shirt, girded with straps. On the face of the old man is anxious. The dying sprouts of cabbage, placed by the author in the foreground, are to blame. Looking into the horizon, the peasant is trying to see the nascent clouds.
The habit of counting only on oneself, the ability to work, endurance and perseverance – all these most important qualities of a person associated with peasant labor, cannot always be sufficient for success. Work makes the viewer think about the fate of the peasants in the country.
The color scheme of the picture is “real”. Sunlight, illuminating the face of the peasant, is confused in his beard, creates a feeling of heat and spirit.
