Overview of the painting :

Overgrown pond. Domotkanovo – Valentin Aleksandrovich Serov. 1888. Oil on canvas. 70.5×89.2
Evening sky hung over an old pond. The trees on the shore seemed to bend on purpose to see their reflection in quiet water. The leaves of the water lilies covered the pond with a greenish-brown blanket. Everything is ready to go to sleep.

The author frankly admires the opened landscape, tries to convey to the viewer his admiration for Russian nature. The multi-colored sky stains the vegetation of the water surface in a silver color. The picture clearly feels the atmosphere of late summer bordering the fall. The last sun’s rays are entangled in the branches of trees, they are trying to free the light wind.

The water surface is so perfect that it seems that the car that has lost in the water lilies is about to splash its tail, breaking the unnaturally perfect water mirror. Gold clouds are disheveled by the wind.

The audience hears the sounds of the August evening: the dragonfly of grasshoppers. Landscape for everyone seems familiar and close. The author managed to make it so reliable and accurate that a sense of presence is created.
