Overview of the painting :

In the middle of the valley of the same – Shishkin. 1883. Oil on canvas. 136.5×203.5

The theme of loneliness in this work of the artist is piercing and powerful. The author often looked for topics for his work in the events of his own complex and complete tragedies of life. This time, the source of inspiration was a song on Merzlyakov’s poems, which became popular in the mass consciousness of the people.

The content of the poem is surprisingly consonant with the fate of the great master. The work itself is full of longing, loneliness and sadness. A powerful oak reigns over an endless valley, doomed to complete loneliness and meaningless existence. There is not a single plant that could be a central way of working.

It is interesting that the picture is completely devoid of human presence. The path that is lost in the depths of the valley is too narrow and groomed. The burdocks and thistle, which grow in abundance along the edges of the path, emphasize its unclaimed, loneliness…

The sun is timid, the light in the work is uneven. The clouds hanging over the valley prevent the light from penetrating the earth.

The color scheme of the picture is not rich. The master was well successful in numerous shades. The complex and heavy sky is full of shades of pink, blue, yellow and pure white.

The artist, as always, managed to fill the picture with numerous details that make the image a reality. The valley seems to sound. The wind walks freely in a vast space. The rustle of foliage is a powerful oak, like the grunts of an old man who does not attract anyone, but annoys.

In the atmosphere of the picture, the main thing is sadness and gulk ringing loneliness. The work was created during the creative heyday of the master, when his best works were created. The picture is written in confident strokes, the workshop composition of the work helps to uncover the idea of the picture, emphasizes the energy of the landscape, its thoroughness and harmony.
