Overview of the painting :
Tsarevna-Lyagushka – Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov. 1901-1918. Oil on canvas. 185 x 250 cm
The picture is an illustration of the fairy tale at that time, when a beautiful princess who has ceased to be a frog dances at a celebration. It is precisely the moment when, during dances from the remnants of food and bones, birds in their sleeves, Tsarevna-Lyagushka created a wonderful lake and snow-white swans on it.
The composition of the picture is original and sophisticated elaboration of parts. The image of the Princess Frog is given in a special way – the girl is depicted from the back, in a bizarre pose during the dance. Her outlines, as well as the positions of musicians emphasize the fact that the picture depicts an active movement. The faces of the musicians are fascinated by the beauty of yesterday’s frog, its amazing magic and grace in dance.
The princess is dressed in an elegant Russian dress made of rich colored material with very long slotted sleeves, under which is a snow-white shirt with lush sleeves. Her hair is braided into two long thick blond braids and decorated with a spectacular headgear – a low coconut with a scattering of multi-colored gemstones. In the hands of the princess is an air and light white scarf.
Events in the picture take place in richly decorated royal chambers with well-painted walls and a luxurious colored carpet on the floor. Viewers see only the angle of the table, but it can be assumed that the feast was magnificent. In the background is a distant Russian village, standing on the lake, with figures of girls in folk dresses spinning in a round dance. Swans float on the lake, several more birds rushed to the water from the sky.
From the picture blows a festive, magical atmosphere, it strikes with its beauty and smartness. The sophistication of details and the elegant drawing of images underscores the beauty of fairy tales and ancient Russian customs.
