Overview of the painting :

Autumn in Abramtsevo – Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov. 1890. Oil on canvas 77.5×126

The painting “Autumn in Abramtsevo” is one of the most famous and iconic works of Vasily Polenov. The author improved his landscape technique all his life, creating subgenres and finding new means of expressiveness. The presented picture is the translator of the new idea of the painter in the field of composition building – the author for the first time refuses his favorite technique of contrasting the front and back plans, unfolding in front of us all the beauty of the autumn forest, made from one point.

A wonderful work was written in 1890, when the Polenov just returned from Paris. His main task now was to find a good quiet place for his future estate, for this he and his friend painter K. The Korovin often made river walks, admiring the picturesque shores. This work was conceived in one of these walks, and very soon brilliantly performed.

The name of the picture emphasizes not only time, but also place – this is Abramtsevo. This picturesque place, located only 60 km from Moscow, is called the “place of power” of Russian artists. But how else, because here Mamontov himself and his family settled in a beautiful estate, and gently hosted guests, the metropolitan intelligentsia, the most outstanding people of his time. Repin, Surikov, Vasnetsov, Nestorov, Korovin and many others came here to stay and work.

For inspiration and stories, Vasily Polenov also called into the estate. Moreover, the artist became very friends with the Mammoths, messed around with children a lot, taught them to go on a boat, fell in love and created. Here the Polenov met his love, and more than once. Twice his love crashed: for the first time his secret lover suddenly died due to a medical error, for the second time the painter’s feelings were rejected, but for the third time he became happy – Natalya Yakunchikova, the sister of Mamontova’s wife, became a devoted wife and close friend of the artist. Here in Abramtsevo they married. Moreover, Natalya Vasilievna Polenova subsequently created memoirs, which she called the closest word for them – “Abramtsevo”.

Knowing these facts, you evaluate this work in a completely different way, which reveals to us the beauty of the reserved place of the master’s favorite estate.

Critics and spectators immediately noted the melody of the sound and the lyrical nature of the picture, although some rhythmic rigor in the compositional structure is characteristic of work. However, the richest coloristic solution, freshness of colors and some personal love attitude of the artist Polenov, turned the work into a romantic element, delightfully beautiful and full-sound.

A pupil of the artist’s work will notice that this time the author did not introduce a person or any other distractions into the plot. Polenov sought to convey the smallest transitional states of nature as accurately and subtly as possible. Here autumn has already won back its rights by the summer, painting trees in bright yellow. However, some warm feeling still flies in the air, which sends the viewer to the recent friendly summer days. This sensation is in a clean blue sky, in calm mirror water, in green, barely noticeable splashes of grass on the shore, in quiet trees, the foliage of which is still not trembling by a gusty autumn wind.

The merit of the extraordinary realism and touchiness of the canvas in the scrupulous technique and the unusually accurate selection of colors and shades, the finest transitions and harmonious contrasts. Well, and of course, in the genius of the creator of the picture – only a talented hand was able to breathe life into work, create a masterpiece full of purity, poetry, love and natural natural splendor.
