Overview of the painting :

Cry Yaroslavna – Perov. 1881. Oil on canvas

One of the last works of the great artist bears the seal of fading talent. The picture was created when the master was sick. However, despite a somewhat inaccurate, “failed” drawing, the growth of posture, painful pathetics, the picture retained the manner and technique of the great painter.

The plot of the oldest Russian literary work in the eyes of the artist acquires special significance. Great suffering Yaroslavna. Her face is facing the sky in a desperate prayer. The setting sun painted the horizon in a bluish pink color, the islands of the frequencybreaker fixed in the sky, the birds alarmed by lamentations circle over the ancient city. The whole picture is filled with an alarming expectation, a premonition of tragedy. The artist seemed to have put his own desperate desire to live in his work.

The colors of the heroine costume are consonant with the surrounding landscape. The author tries to be reliable in the transmission of the robe and landscape, but one cannot help but notice some theatricality, convention, and fake brightness in the work.

The main attention of the artist is on the face of the heroine. This is perhaps the only place in the work, performed with extraordinary skill and reliability. The artist managed to convey despair, internal tension and timid hope of Yaroslavna. The heroine is ready to soar into the sky to fly to help her beloved prince. The incomplete sincerity of the heroine is the main success of the great artist.

The picture was a desperate attempt by the master to overcome the disease, return to normal work, to creativity.
