Overview of the painting :
Wack – Michelangelo Merizi da Caravaggio. Around 1595-1597. Oil on canvas. 95×85
Standing at the origins of Baroque, Caravaggio (1571-1610) painted this picture in a relatively serene period of his life. Hence the choice of topic – Wack, the Greek god of wine and fun, in the image of which the master showed the young man with a languid look, an affectionate gesture holding out a glass of wine to the audience.
His strong, muscular body is full of health, a gentle blush plays on his cheeks, his chubby lips are considered, and the color of the canvas leaves the feeling of the holiday. But the fruits in the vase facing Wakkh are not so fresh: the apple is rotten, there is a wormhole on it. And the grape leaves in the crown of the hero are already wilted.
Caravaggio was not afraid to portray life as it is, he sharply felt her hidden drama, which was reflected in his future art, which affected all European painting. The artist returned to the topic of a cheerful ancient god once more, but wrote in his image himself, physically and mentally exhausted by illness (the canvas “Sick Wack”, stored in the Borghese Gallery in Rome).
