Overview of the painting :

Portrait of the artist Vasily Ivanovich Surikov – Ilya Efimovich Repin. 1877. Oil on canvas. 62.5 x 215 cm
The portrait of Surikov’s brush Repin is the undoubted luck of the artist. The master of the psychological portrait perfectly conveys the character, temperament of his colleague.

Repinsky Surikov is full of strength and ambition. Black hair, a fashionable beard, chubby red lips, a slightly full face, black eyes – talked about the fullness of health, about the prime of life of the hero. The gaze is noticeably subtle embarrassment caused by the inappropriateness of the role of the sitter. The viewer has the feeling that Surikov is about to begin to move, tired of stillness.

Snow-white collar, black tie, jacket… Surikov is a man with impeccable taste, smart and able to dress well. Neutral greenish background destroys the burgundy back of the chair, harmonizing with the color of the hero’s lips, emphasizing the bright appearance and originality of the personality.

It feels like Repin is deeply respected, with some even trepidation, to his colleague.
