Overview of the painting :
Portrait of F. AND. Chaliapin in the role of Olofern – Alexander Yakovlevich Golovin. 1908. Canvas, tempera, pastel. 163.5×212
“Portrait of F. AND. Chaliapin as Olofern ”is one of the best works of the artist and stage designer A. I AM. Head (1863-1930). It reproduces the misanzena from opera A. N. Serova “Judith”.
Chaliapin-Olofern lies on a luxurious bed in a lushly cleaned tent, holding a bowl in his right hand, and pointing forward with his left arrogant gesture. The composition of the canvas is built according to the laws of easel painting, and the angle of the model and arbitrary lighting of objects inform the work of the nature of fresco painting. The figure of Chaliapin in the role of an Assyrian military leader almost merges with the background, which makes it look like a kind of decorative pattern. The canvas is permeated with a wave-shaped movement, which is the main plastic motive expressing the nature of the musical solution of the image of the eastern commander. The coloristic sound of the work is extremely rich. In this theatrical portrait of Golovin, a richly bright color costume and headgear of the artist, as if emphasizing the beauty of the voice of the great Russian singer.
