Overview of the painting :
Portrait of Princess Z. N. Yusupova – Valentin Aleksandrovich Serov. 1902. Oil on canvas. 181.5×133
The princess Yusupova is magnificent on the ceremonial portrait of Serov’s brush. Light lady, aristocrat to the ends of the fingers. The dress gives out an exquisite taste and rigorous following fashion. The princess could decorate the most demanding fashion magazine of the early twentieth century.
The interior of the room seems to be created specifically for the portrait – so harmoniously complements the model. The dog in the portrait is not accidental. It is an integral part of ceremonial portraits since the Italian Renaissance.
The princess on the portrait is sweet and kind. Her look is open. The viewer’s look is attracted by an interesting detail: the princess’s right hand, lying on her lap. Thin, pale, sharpened. Serov with special care prescribed this detail, so elegantly revealing the character of Countess Yusupova.
