Overview of the painting :

Portrait of the State Lady A. M. Izmailova – Alexey Petrovich Antropov. 1759. Oil on canvas. 44.5×57.2

AND. P. Antropov is a representative of the Baroque style, in the work of which the national version of the secular chamber portrait has finally developed. It was a portrait of the stats-dam of Anastasia Mikhailovna Izmailova, nee Naryshkina, who was born, that became his kind of exam for him. The work was very liked by the then fashionable Italian portrait painter P. Rotary, who spoke very flattering about her. This brought fame to the Antropo.

Anastasia Mikhailovna was the closest friend and distant relative of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. Bright large features of the face give out the strong and imperious nature of the heroine. She is filled with dignity, in her eyes they will pass through confidence and tranquility, the pose is restrained and majestic. The coloristic solution of the canvas, built on the sound and contrast combination of pink, blue and white, gives the portrait increased decorativeness. The author does not seek to penetrate the inner world of his model, he only carefully examines the features of her face, and through them shows imperious and strong-willed nature. Antropov also notes the status of the model: on the chest of Izmailova – a brooch with a portrait of Elizabeth Petrovna, strewn with diamonds, which speaks of the Empress’s personal disposition to her court lady.
