Overview of the painting :
Portrait of the writer Leonid Andreev – Valentin Aleksandrovich Serov. 1907. Cardboard, watercolor, tempera. 73.3×56.4
Andreev is a tragic figure of Russian literature. Surviving many upheavals, deprivations, disappointments, the writer became interested in religion. The time of creating the portrait coincides with this difficult period.
Ascetic clothes are black, there is no writer’s sight, no joy or hope. Only sorrow and despondency. The yellowish background fully coincides with the complexion of the hero. Serov depicts Andreev as transparent, thereby revealing the topic of devastation, renunciation of life. The look of the writer is recorded. Andreev does not want to see anyone’s eyes. He is immersed in tragic and gloomy thoughts. The eyes of the writer are amazing – they are different. Sereov, as it were, gives his model the ability to see the truth. Maybe this ability disappointed the writer in life?
The choice of the portrait technique is not accidental. It is watercolors and tempera that can convey fragility, transparency, subtlety.
