Overview of the painting :
Samuel’s spirit, called to Saul by the sorceress from Aendor – Salvatore Rosa. 1668. Oil on canvas. 273×193
Salvatore Rosa (1615-1673) created landscapes, portraits, battle and historical paintings, as well as works on mythological and biblical topics.
The canvas “The Spirit of Samuel, called to Saul by the sorceress from Aendor” is written on a biblical plot. King Saul, who fought with the Philistines, went to Aendor to find out who would be the winner. In Aendor, the spirit of King Samuel appeared to him, predicting defeat in the war and death. This picture of an Italian artist anticipates the painting of romanticism, before the birth of which there was even more than a century.
