The work was ordered by the Grand Duchy author at that time when he was not known to anyone else. The master was given the summer residence of members of the imperial surname on the shores of the Gulf of Finland.
In the dull, inexpressive northern shore, the author managed to find both romantic sound, and beauty, and an extraordinary atmosphere.
The main thing in the landscape is sunset, its colorful content, so reliably and talentedly depicted by the author, fills the work with a special atmosphere. There is a person in the landscape (lone fisherman in a boat, nets exposed for drying). The very fact of an effective presence fills the landscape with some drama and sound. The sea appears not only as a beautiful object for the image, it is a source of income, a field for human activity.
Evening sky, reflected in the sea surface, stains it in its colors, warm and soft.
The appearance of the dilapidated marinas running away of the ship, the foggy horizon – create an atmosphere of romantic sadness.
The master was especially successful in clouds painted with evening solar palette, water surface, almost perfect, suede boulders in the foreground. Even the sticks on which the nets are hung look like the towers of an old castle.
