Description of the picture :
Astronomeres – Jan Vermeer Delft. Oil on canvas. 51.5×45.5
Perhaps to paint this picture, the famous Dutch painter Vermeer was posed by the no less famous scientist and inventor of the microscope Anthony van Levenguk.
The astronomer’s hand touches the globe of the celestial sphere. There are a dozen books on the closet, a table with three drawn circles hangs, the purpose of which is currently not defined. Without books, maps, astrolabe and a circular, it is impossible to imagine the scientist of that distant time. The artist so accurately prescribed the details of the picture that the illustration he reproduced in the open book of the astronomer allowed researchers to establish its name.
