Italy can be considered the birthplace of puppet theatre. The most well-known characters such as Malvina, Piero Buratino Artemon, harlequin, Columbine, Pantaloon – wearing Italian names. Over time characters-puppets stepped far beyond Italy and under other names conquered the world. In Italy and in other countries, puppet museums – one of the most beloved and visited. The museums of Sicily, dedicated to the puppets, one of the richest in artifacts, traditions and dynasties puppet masters.
Puppet Museum “poppy” in Syracuse opened to the public not so long ago, in 2006. In the exposition of the set of dolls, the oldest of which date back to the 16th century.
The most valuable exhibits – the heroes of traditional marionette theatre – knights, monsters, Saracens, villains, angels and devils, sorcerers and wizards. Performances featuring wooden actors once entertained the participants of the Crusades, they took part in the mysteries that took place in the temples. Among the favorite stories – the adventure of the knight Orlando, his meeting with the monsters and treacherous witches, his feats on the battlefields, the protection of the weak and poor.
Dolls make a strong impression. No less interesting and other things – technical devices, the collection of documents related to the development of puppet culture in Sicily.
The Museum often hosts performances and talks about the backstage secrets of the puppet theatre. Conversations, lectures are held with the participation of hereditary puppeteers of Sicily (Mauceri, Olivo, Pasqualino). All these people are passionate about their work, all learned the craft from their fathers and grandfathers.
In addition to the Museum, it is possible to visit a workshop for making puppets, visit the puppet theater. In a small auditorium, which is constantly sold out (to buy the tickets in advance), are very real traditional puppet shows. Viewers desire to distribute the programs in English, the performances are in Italian.
The entrance ticket costs about 7 euros. The cost varies depending on what you want to see and what to participate. In the gift shop you can buy petite doll, even a model of the real theater (expensive!).
The traditional puppet theater of Sicily entered in the register of the treasures of world culture of UNESCO as a unique phenomenon, preserved for millennia virtually unchanged.
