Overview of the painting :
The Valley of the River is Isaac Ilyich Levitan. Autumn. 1895. Paper, pastel. 52×67
The artist’s iron work depicts a cloudy and shaky autumn day. Away past the hills overgrown with dark forest runs away a lazy river crowded with rains. In the foreground are paintings of a small grove painted in the fall. Faded meadows along the river have already lost their former brightness and freshness, they are ready to meet the winter. The gray, uneven and cold sky covers the landscape, creates an atmosphere of expectation, gives the landscape a special autumn sadness.
The shades of yellow and brown revive the faded green color of meadows, the water surface of the river echoes the cloud sky. The color of the sky is complex, here the author managed to convey many shades, as well as an interesting play of light.
