Description of the picture :

Virgin Mary in Glory – Robert Kampen. Wood, butter. 47 x 31 cm

Artists of the Northern Renaissance often wrote paintings for biblical plots for wealthy customers or churches. One of these works is in front of us.

In the foreground, sitting at the red brick wall, as if separating them from the world, they are arguing with St. Peter and St. Augustine. Peter sits on the bench, on his head is a heavy golden tiara, richly inlaid with precious stones. A red-yellow cloak, fastened with a large agraph, soft folds descends to the ground. He is no longer young, his hair and beard are turned gray, wrinkles have chosen his forehead, but dark living eyes glow with his mind and wisdom. Despite his slight fatigue, he listens carefully to the interlocutor. In his left hand he holds two keys to the kingdom of heaven.

And on the right, in a blue cloak, finished with a wide golden border, Augustine sits in a white bishop’s robe and a snow-white tiara. He has a exhausted, thin face, a narrow long nose, a sharp chin. He reads a book on his lap in a focused manner.

Between them, a donator (picture customer) stands on his lap – a middle-aged, with a big bald head, a man dressed in a black cloak and admiring the attentive conversation.

During the dispute, the clouds in the sky diverge to the side, and before them appears the Virgin with a baby. Sitting on the bench, she looks at Jesus with tenderness, affectionately holding him. Red hair in waves descends on blue robes, shading light skin and emphasizing the soft oval of a young face. The fingers of the right hand give the debater a sign.

And in the background is a squirrel city spread over the hills, written with the smallest details. A wide road, looping, goes beyond the horizon.

And of course, the favorite variety of colors of the painter. Juicy red and bright blue, warm orange and noble olive-green, white and brown – all of them create an atmosphere of emotional upsurge and festive mood.

The artist achieves incredible skill by transmitting the texture of heavy silk fabrics, the cold brilliance of key metal, the uniqueness of luxurious agraphs. The harmony and beauty of the world depicted in the works of Robert Campen do not leave anyone indifferent.
