Overview of the painting :
Fashionable wife – Pavel Andreevich Fedotov. Cardboard, butter. 24.5 x 29.8 cm
The canvas has a comic plot. The center of the composition depicts an interesting young lady who returned home from a trip abroad. She is wearing an exquisite, stylish red dress with ribbons. A white beret is worn on the woman’s head. It is important for the lady to stand at the table, proudly raising her head and smoking papyros.
To work, the master of the brush composed a satirical poem about the young lady, who used to do housework and lived for the family, but when she walked on a grand scale in Paris, she turned into a secular “lion”. Now she shows her arrogance and swagger to others.
Near the table is a black arap in a long, striped, yellow candura. The mistress brought him from a trip for fun. He faithfully walks around her house and watches every step. Domochadians look at all this with surprise! They will not recognize the former mistress of the house.
A woman hands out a red flap to her husband who approached her. She wants her husband to buy her fabric for a new outfit on her order. On the table at the woman lies a notebook with records of fashionable styles. She keeps notes with great interest. The fashionista is very watching herself and happy with life.
In the right corner of the canvas, the artist depicted the child surrounded by scattered toys. The baby is crying sobbing, no one pays attention to him. He is left to his own devices. The boy wants the attention of her mother, but she is too busy with herself. It was this moment that was the main one in the work, and the brush master sealed it brightly and believablely.
The picture is written in light gray tones, using yellow, green, red and brown scales. It is presented as a sketch and is not completed, although the artist’s work was enormous. His work was criticized by magazine editors. They saw in the works of Fedotov a mockery of people. He has fewer orders, popularity has declined.
He could not make the engravings from paintings for replication and sales – he did not allow censorship. Despite all the difficulties and hardships, the desperate artist continued to work hard and conquer the world with his brilliant creations.
